If you’re living with IBD, you know what a flare feels like—pain, fatigue, food fears, and confusion about what to eat. We get it. Every dietitian in our practice lives with IBD, too. That’s why we created a practical road map to help you feel supported through every step—especially if you’re newly diagnosed or just starting to explore your IBD nutrition journey.

This blog will discuss the road map we have created, why it’s important to prioritize nutrition during a flare, and what you’ll walk away with from our NEW ebook – In a Flare? Start here

In a flare? Start here!

But first, did you know there are different types of flares?

Throughout the course of IBD, someone can experience different types of flares which is why it is essential to check inflammatory markers (like CRP and fecal calprotectin) even if you “feel fine.”

  1. You can be inflamed and have little to no symptoms.
    • Sometimes, people with this type of flare are able to tolerate many types of foods.
  2. You can be inflamed and not be able to tolerate many foods and experience multiple gastrointestinal symptoms.
    • Knowing there can be little to no symptoms and inflammation can be high is an important reason why checking inflammatory markers as required is so important for your health.

Why is it important to prioritize nutrition during a flare?

Where do we start! Nutrition can help support healing and make symptoms worse. Here’s why prioritizing food and nutrition matters:

  • Gut inflammation during a flare can damage the intestinal lining impairing nutrient absorption
  • Nutrient needs increase during a flare because of the increase in inflammation and the body is in “repair” mode
  • Inflammation can disrupt the normal digestion and absorption processes, leading to malabsorption of nutrients. This means that even if nutrient intake is adequate, the body may not be able to utilize them efficiently.
  • Nutrition can help medication work BETTER

And no, we don’t believe in rigid food rules or diets. We are all about adopting a sustainable dietary pattern over time and emphasizing foods found in this blog!

Here’s what you’ll find in the ebook, In a Flare? Start here!
