The gut microbiome is a complex environment within our guts that is just beginning to be understood. The literature is in its infancy and it’s a fascinating area to learn about! So, let’s take a deeper dive! Definitions Microbiome: refers to the collection of genomes from all the microorganisms in the environment. Microbiota: usually refers to microorganisms that are found within a specific environment. What is the gut microbiome? Th gut microbiome is made up of trillions of microorganisms and their genetic material living in your intestinal tract. That’s more than all the stars in our galaxy! It’s composed of mainly bacteria, but also contains yeast, bacteria, viruses, and parasites. The large intestine houses the largest population of these organisms and they are involved in many functions critical to your health including the immune system, energy production, and all of our B vitamin production.
