The Fun, Simple Way to Reduce Symptoms & Expand Your Diet for IBD

This program provides IBD patients with effective tools and nutritional support to alleviate symptoms, improve energy and add color back to your life!

You might be wondering… How in the world do I figure out what’s IBD friendly?

The two most popular ways people try to determine what they can eat with IBD are:

1) Googling it or

2) Tracking what they eat to try and pinpoint which foods trigger their IBD symptoms

For best results, I would strongly recommend AGAINST trying either of these methods, and I’ll tell you why…

Why typing "what to eat for IBD" in a search engine doesn’t work

You’ve probably already figured this out but Googling “what to eat for IBD” can leave you feeling pretty conflicted. There are lots of people writing about what to eat for IBD who will often exclude really important context. The context can be incredible valuable for understanding the overall picture and uniqueness of each person’s journey.

Secondly, when googling what to eat for your IBD you’ll often see lots of experiential shares rather than evidence-backed information or information that’s specific to you and your health journey. This can sometimes take you down the wrong path, especially if you are relying on managing your IBD solely based on what others have done for their IBD.

Reminder: the internet is not a credible dietitian...

This goes without saying but Google, blogs, forums and general information online are not registered & IBD-specialized dietitians. Sometimes Google can be helpful at answering the question of “what to eat for IBD”, but it doesn’t tell you HOW to do it.

As in, how do you actually implement an IBD-friendly approach?

How do you advance your diet after strictures, being low fiber and in an IBD flare?

And how can you use nutrition in a targeted way to reduce IBD symptoms?

The bottom line is: Just like you wouldn’t Google what dose medication to take, Googling how to use nutrition to treat IBD also is not the best route.

Star icon

Why you should avoid tracking food to pinpoint food triggers and IBD symptoms…

When you’re curious about what to eat for IBD, you might also consider tracking what you eat and the corresponding symptoms.

By doing this, it’s common to find yourself unnecessarily over-restricted, since tracking food as a method of pinpointing symptoms can be very misleading in IBD. It just doesn’t work this way. Symptoms alone are not a reliable indicator of the state of your IBD.

Just because a food triggers symptoms, does not mean it should be removed from your diet. On the flip side, some food patterns might actually contribute to risk of inflammation flare ups, despite not noticeably contributing to symptoms. We specifically help people modify their food to improve tolerance over time, reduce symptoms and maintain optimal gut health.

Reduce the strain of IBD with our support

We know it can be hard to find a path forward – especially when you are dealing with IBD symptoms that totally turn your world upside down. It can be hard to know who to trust and where to get the support you deserve.

And we can tell you from personal experience… It is a lot of weight to carry on your own. So much extra time and energy goes into navigating IBD nutrition-related decisions by yourself.

We’re here to help you reduce that extra weight so you can finally breathe a sigh of relief and focus on the fun things in life!

After working with thousands of IBD patients like you (plus our own years of lived experience with IBD) we created a program to answer your biggest questions, show you the path forward and help you see improvements in your IBD.

If you are ready to offload your nutrition to IBD experts & have a safe place to learn, ask questions, and ultimately feel empowered in your IBD journey then you are in the right place.

We created Plant Magic just for you.

Hear from others about what’s possible

I am so glad I found you and your team… I feel like I can breathe again knowing I have answers and a plan for my UC. I’ve worked with several dietitians and 2 functional medicine providers previously – and what I’ve gotten out of my time with CCD far outweighs all of it! Thankful for you all!!!
I’ve had Crohn’s for over 20 years now, and it brings tears to my eyes just thinking about how much your support has changed my trajectory. I now have a plan for flare ups and I know how to navigate nutrition better now.

We are the
Crohn’s and Colitis Dietitians™

We’re Ashley and Danielle, The Crohn’s & Colitis Dietitians. We understand the struggle you might be experiencing right now – the frustration, confusion and pain – because we have IBD, too.

Both of us have been diagnosed with IBD and we absolutely love making your journey with nutrition easier, lighter and brighter.

Through our nutrition therapy practice, we have the privilege of helping thousands of patients with Crohn’s or Colitis each year find symptom relief and reduce their risk of flare ups.

I thought I knew what I was doing with my nutrition (I have a degree in nutrition too) – but I felt very stuck and limited with my diet. I didn’t know how to move forward past my safe foods without triggering symptoms. After working with you – I feel so much better! I’ve been able to even add beans back in. I would have never imagined I could do that when I started!
When I came to CCD I was underweight and having 20+ bowel movements per day. I felt like my microscopic colitis treatment was very limited with what could be done with my doctor. I was so fatigued and didn’t know what to do. I’m so glad I found you all – I’m now having only 3 bowel movements per day and energy has really improved. I’ve been on the same medication for the last year and the only thing that’s changed is incorporating all of the great tools you’ve given me. I can’t thank you enough.

Navigate your IBD with confidence

Our Plant Magic program provides IBD patients with effective tools and evidence-based nutritional support to alleviate symptoms, reduce flares and increase the likelihood of long-term IBD remission.

Plant Magic includes our video library, our nutrition guidebook, meal plans, weekly guidance through live and recorded calls, and ongoing community support. We also have an option for 1:1 guidance.

Our 3-Step Approach for IBD

Phase 1: Laying the Foundation & Creating a Plan Forward

There is overwhelming evidence showing us that nutrition matters and plays a crucial role in symptom remission and inflammation reduction.

Although there are some big picture similarities between those with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and microscopic colitis, there are also many differences depending on what type of IBD you have, where your disease is located and what symptoms you have.

In phase one, we will:

  • Go over the basics of what to eat with IBD and how to reduce symptoms using our RAINBOW™ diet approach
  • For those in our 1:1 track, together we will craft a customized plan for you

RAINBOW is the same system we’ve used successfully for the last 9 years and is currently being studied by an IBD research institute.

Phase 2: Eating the RAINBOW & Finding Food Freedom

We know that getting more color, omega 3’s and fiber is so important for reducing Inflammatory Bowel Disease activity and inflammation.

Expanding the diet is often the most challenging part for those of us with IBD due to food-triggered symptoms and misinformation around diet. Some studies even show that upwards of 30-70% of those with IBD have narrowing or strictures which can further complicate things.

In phase two, we will:

  • Help you expand your diet without symptoms
  • Provde a roadmap specifically designed to help you adapt and progress your diet at your own pace

The goal of this phase is to help you move at your own pace, learn to trust your body more and increase the food freedom in your life.

Phase 3: Finding Balance & Building Long Term Success Strategies

Our team of dietitians have IBD themselves, allowing us to have an informed approach because we get it! We understand the things you’re struggling with right now – the pain, the bloating, the confusion, the fear and all of the questions.

In phase 3, we will:

  • Fill in the gaps for your most commonly asked questions
  • Help you develop a long term plan for success and what to do if flares arise
  • Discuss yearly to-dos so you can maintain your health gains

We will also discuss navigating restaurants, social situations and how to make compromises that don’t compromise your gut. 🙏

Who is this program for?

Plant Magic is for those diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease looking for an expert-guided, evidence-based, fun and simple roadmap for expanding your diet and getting symptom relief.

I had a terrible history of colitis. I have had trouble keeping a job in the past and flares have put me in the hospital. I had tried some nutrition stuff in the past but it had minimal results. Then I found CCD – I was skeptical at first. Then I realized that the dietitians also had a severe form of IBD which gave me more comfort – I only wish I found this program earlier. This program is great and you actually get educated on how and why the protocol works. I can’t say enough about this life changing experience!
I’ve had IBD for over 10 years now and have been dealing with strictures and was told to go on a low-fiber diet. Before starting with CCD I had no idea that there are different types of strictures and that the type I have can resolve with medication & nutrition strategies. I’ve been so excited to add my favorite foods back! It’s been really surprising that I’ve been able to add leafy greens, oats and even beans! I feel a lot more energized having more food options and I haven’t had any flare-ups since incorporating your strategies for me.

More energy. Less symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need more plants and color?

If there is one thing we know about navigating IBD nutrition it’s that much of the information readily available online is often incomplete at best, and the information can be very conflicting. Much of the diets listed are bland, boring and require a lot of work.

You might be surprised to learn that no reputable organization actually suggests bland, low fiber approaches long term for IBD. In fact, we know that getting color and fiber in the diet is incredibly important for inflammation reduction and long term remission in IBD.

How do you navigate this when in a flare up? Or with strictures? After surgery or with no colon? We can show you how! We will teach you how to eat the RAINBOW (even with IBD).

Why would I want to expand my diet beyond my “safe” foods?

We know what it’s like to be surviving on just a handful of foods. You’ve likely got to this point out of desperation to control your symptoms.

However, we want to help you move past survival mode and into getting what you need so your body can work with you easier. Many of us with IBD end up malnourished at some point, however this can hold us back from improving and can actually cause more symptoms.

Will I have to track everything I eat?!

No way. Don’t get us wrong – sometimes we use tracking to help our patients – but we never use tracking as a starting point. We think tracking what you eat is an approach that doesn’t work well with IBD, as it can be pretty misleading! Food intolerances can change and resolve overtime with improvements to the gut microbiome. In phase two of Plant Magic we discuss how to reduce symptoms with many common “trigger foods”.

Does this program follow a restrictive diet?

No. We encourage and provide a path for you to expand your diet and reduce symptoms without restrictive approaches. This program also focuses on a “what to add” instead of a “what to take away” approach.

Why Crohn's and Colitis Dietitians?

Every dietitian on our team has been diagnosed with a form of IBD, and while that alone doesn’t make us credible enough to provide quality nutrition advice alone, it means we get it and you won’t have to explain yourself. We have helped thousands of IBD patients over the last 9 years find relief and hope again when it comes to navigating nutrition, and we are on a mission to raise the standard of care for IBD patients like us. We are happy to say we feel we’re already seeing the ripple effects as more providers and IBD patients learn what’s possible.

Majority of our patients come to us after seeing multiple providers, dietitians and having tried everything under the sun. There aren’t many scenarios we haven’t encountered, making us very effective partners as you make important decisions in your care.

How is this different from other IBD programs?

We acknowledge that there are several options for IBD care you could go with, and we hope you choose the one that feels right for you. However, I don’t think you’ll find a more comprehensive, quality resource designed specifically with your needs in mind, nor a more compassionate team truly dedicated to helping you see improvements.

Here is what we DON’T do:

  • Follow a “trial and error” approach to figuring out what works
  • Expect you to keep a dietary log and pin point trigger foods
  • Encourage restrictive diets that involve lots of prep and leave you afraid
  • Leave you high and dry with a handout and no clear next steps
  • Blame you for your symptoms or flare ups
  • Give you 20 supplements that aren’t evidence based
  • Suggest a supplement or food approach without telling you the evidence on the approach
  • Tell you to go off your meds without your doctor’s input
  • Leave you guessing on what to do on your own
  • Give you an unsustainable “black-and-white” approach

What we DO instead:

  • Provide clear guidance
  • Help you put together a plan that’s right for you
  • Tell you how to navigate trigger foods & make compromises instead of eliminating them
  • Encourage abundance and help you get there the most effective way while helping you learn to trust your body again
  • Remind you that you didn’t sign up for your diagnosis and help you focus on the things you can control while letting go of what you can’t
  • Provide information on evidence backed supplementation and help you narrow down what’s most important
  • Always provide the evidence so that you can make an empowered decision for you
  • Cheer you on with your medication route alongside your doctor and help you feel more at ease

Do I have to attend live group calls?

No. Although we recommend attending as many live calls as possible, replays are available and you are welcome to submit questions you have beforehand for all calls. You will also have access to a support forum where you can ask questions and receive guidance from us as well.

I had lost hope prior to meeting you because I felt like my only option was budesonide and immodium which didn’t do much to help when you are having diarrhea 20+ times per day. I was avoiding so many foods just to get by each day. After working with CCD, I’ve finally been able to have hope again. I have a new way of managing my symptoms now and I feel like I have more energy too. My bowel movements decreased to 3-5 times per day with less urgency too AND that’s with adding so many foods back!

More energy. Less symptoms.
